Gamma Ray is one of Justice's - and later Dizzy's - Overdrive Attacks, first introduced in the original Guilty Gear by the former.

It also has an Instant Kill variant in the form of Emotional Gamma Ray (感情的なガンマレイ, Kanjōtekina Ganma Rei?) for Dizzy, replacing I can't... contain my strength in Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator-.

Story[]

Gamma Ray is Justice's signature method of attack. It is among the most singularly destructive attacks in the series, being used to utterly annihilate Japan instantly. Its power comes from the Scales of Juno that That Man planted in Aria. In her sealed form (that is, the Justice that was revived at the end of the Second Holy Order Selection Tournament), however, it is notably less powerful; it takes the form of a beam of energy fired from Justice's shoulder cannons. Justice is not directly seen using it in her true form, although it is said to create a bright light.

Overview[]

Gamma Ray

Justice opens her shoulder cannons, hunches over and briefly charges, and then rears back and roars, blasting almost the entire screen with a massive blue laser.

It does tremendous damage due to its very high number of hits and high base damage, and is capable of annihilating some characters in a single activation if their Guard Balance is flashing. However, in XX, it has a very long startup, as even though the screen flashes and has the super background, the opponent can move and attack to interrupt Justice freely. The attack can easily be avoided if the opponent jumps over and behind her, leaving Justice stuck for so long as she fires the laser that the opponent can taunt several times and still punish her. It should be used with caution with the opponent locked down with nukes on the other side of the screen, as it does a massive amount of chip damage.

In the case of Dizzy, starting with GGX, Necro sequentially fires 2 thin yellow beams at his opponent to stun them, then fires a large blue beam between both of his hands. Meanwhile, Dizzy crosses her arms and looks down in fear at what's about to happen.

In Xrd -Revelator- and beyond, both Necro and Undine respectively fire a small red & blue beam from their index fingers sequentially, then both of them collectively form a large blue/purple ray between their hands - all the while, Dizzy looks scared at the scenario.

Necro taking aim

Necro is about to finish Dizzy's opponent off with a purple blast of energy, but Dizzy tackles him to prevent Necro from killing her foe. As the Gamma Ray barely misses its target, her opponent watches the nuclear explosion in the mountain range behind their backs, and turn their head back with a fearful expression on their face (with the exceptions of Slayer, Ky, Bedman, Raven and Zato, who are bored, starry-eyed, non-reactant, a state of surprise/joy and neutral respectively).

Sol has "Surrendered"

Unlike other Insta-Kills, it doesn't "destroy" the opponent because of her, but the opponent will be "Surrendered", as it was seen of the end battle screen instead of "Destroyed", marking the foe admitting defeat.

Allusions[]

  • The name of this Overdrive is shared with a German power metal band.

Trivia[]

  • A gamma ray is actually the term for an energy ray of small wavelength within an electromagnetic spectrum.
  • It is one of two Instant Kills in Xrd that changes the standard "Destroyed" that follows, the other being And Then She Said... Farewell.
  • Despite Bedman not showing a reaction his bedframe's head turns instead, however it is not visible due to the camera.
  • Axl, Chipp, Slayer, Ramlethal and Dizzy are the only characters to move their hands in response, with Axl and Ram raising their hands in surrender, Chipp pointing at the explosion, Slayer shrugging and Dizzy covering her mouth.
