Revision as of 02:04, 1 August 2020
Guilty Gear -STRIVE- is an upcoming game in the Guilty Gear series that was announced at Evo 2019. It will be the seventh mainline installment, and overall its twenty-fourth release. Not much is known about the game, aside from Daisuke Ishiwatari stating that it will be "a completely new Guilty Gear".
The game is expected to release for PlayStation 4 sometime in early 2021, whereas the arcade version will be distributed via Sega Interactive's ALL.Net P-ras MULTI Version 3.[1]
Gameplay
As of ArcREVO 2019, the gameplay—which was stressed to be a work in progress and that nothing is final—retains the traditional button layout, but adds Dash. It allows players to dash with either or + Dash. The Tension Gauge, Faultless Defense, Throws ( + ), revised Roman Cancels ( + + ), and Bursts ( + ) remain. However, Throws will miss out of range like any other attack, instead of a doing a normal attack. The Gatling system has also been changed: weak attacks no longer universally cancel into heavy attacks; rather, they combo into command normal or special moves. [2]
Dust Attacks (), while still keeping its overhead feature, have been slightly revised as well. The 'side launching' follow up feature has been removed, and the 'air launching' followup is only available after a counterhit. Doing it mid-combo will only result in the opponent being knocked away. Sweeps ( + ), while working normally mid-combo, will now 'bounce' the opponent on counterhit, allowing for a combo afterwards. After the bounce, though, the opponent will be placed in a knockdown setting if not hit. [2]
It drops the Xrd Blitz Shield/Attack and Danger Time mechanics, and the series' Dead Angles Attacks. Recovery motions have been changed, and only moves with the "sweep" attribute (such as Crouching Dust) cause knockdown; otherwise, characters do an invincible roll as soon as they touch the ground. The R.I.S.C. Gauge does return, working as usual. Combos appear to be relatively short, but counter-hits increase both the damage and hit-stun of attacks, and filling an opponent's R.I.S.C. meter may turn the match into one that requires longer combos. Chip damage exists, but cannot kill a character.[2]
A new mechanic is the wall-stick hit-state. When a character is in a corner and gets knocked off their feet, they will stick to the wall, slowly slide down and fall on the ground. Players can continue to attack, or break the wall, causing a stage transition and ending the combo. Doing so gives a massive boost to Tension or damage, and a character-specific beneficial status effect as a tradeoff. Regarding effects, many stun types and Stagger have been removed, but new statuses (such as "shocked") can be caused either by special moves or stage transitions, and subtly affect how characters play.[2]

Development
Announced to be in development at Evo 2018 by Arc System Works CEO Minoru Kidooka,[3] the core concept of -STRIVE- is neither evolution nor returning to roots, but rather a "complete reconstruction of the franchise". The goal is to create a game that both new and existing players alike would want to get their hands on, undertaking a "full-frontal confrontation with the essence of the fighting game genre" and "high risk move".[4] The aim is to make it so that entry is simple; they are not cutting the depth of the game.[5]
At TGS 2019, general director Daisuke Ishiwatari and director Akira Katano stated that, as a new title, no parts of previous entries are being re-appropriated, and that not all characters from Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 are coming back.[5] Hoping to fully take advantage of 3D[6] and freely move the camera for dynamic angles, Team Red had to re-think how the models were created, in contrast to Xrd models which were designed to look good only from certain angles. Additionally, the team has many new members, due to those with the know-how moving to Granblue Fantasy: Versus and Dragon Ball FighterZ to spread their knowledge of the "anime look" technique.[7]
On November 3, 2019, Daisuke confirmed on an ArcLive stream that the game will have an English dub, making it the third entry to feature an English voice cast since Guilty Gear 2: Overture and Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-.[8] Two days later, the song "Smell of the Game" was released for promotion.[9]
Arc System Works announced that -STRIVE- will have a closed beta, and confirmed that the game will have rollback netcode when released.[10]
On May 15th, 2020, producer Takashi Yamanaka made an official statement regarding the release date of -STRIVE-. Issues with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic affecting the development, caused delays at various points. So the release date for -STRIVE- was pushed back into early 2021 to ensure quality of the game.
Trivia
- The official logo highlights the IV in -STRIVE-, and holds the meaning of four, being the fourth main series game (after 1, 2 and 3). Up until now, X, XX and Xrd all contained the letter X, so they decided to go with "STRIVE" to separate this title from those games.[11]
