Roman Cancel (blue circle; basically an FRC) in Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus.

Roman Cancel (ロマンキャンセル, Roman Kyanseru?), shortened to RC, is a gameplay mechanic in the Guilty Gear series that allows a player to cancel the ending lag of their character's attack in order to create combos. They are signalled by a circle flash that comes for a split-second.

Overview

First appearing in Guilty Gear X, the player can cancel while hitting the opponent with an attack by pushing any three of the attack buttons (Punch, Kick, Slash, or Heavy Slash). It will forcefully stop attack actions and return the character to a normal standing pose (on a grounded hit) or normal airborne state (on an airborne hit). To perform a Roman Cancel, 50% of the Tension Gauge is to be consumed.

Roman Cancels are distinctively known by their unique effect of a pair of crossing light rings surrounding and emitting the character performing it. As of #Reload, the graphics for the rings become more light-based and transparent, akin to the startup flashes of Overdrives. As a bonus, the announcer also yells out the quote "ROMANTIC".

Roman Cancels in the Xrd games offers much more freedom compared to previous games, while also changing into a mere expanding circular aura. They allow cancelling almost any attack at almost any time, allowing players to easily create new blockstrings, combos, and mixups on the fly. They come in multiple colors. They also cost 25% or 50% Tension depending on the situation, but decrease Tension gain by 80% for 6 seconds. During any Roman Cancel, the opponent briefly enters a slowed down state where their movement speed is approximately halved. In case an attack cannot be Roman Cancelled (yellow or purple), a red X will appear over the character during the attempt.

Types

Guilty Gear XX Λ Core

Name Tension Effect
Roman Cancel 50% Normal version. It flashes red if done right.
Force/False Roman Cancel 25% It cannot be used freely as it must be used during very specific frames of certain moves (be it some throws or special moves, commonly on non-connected projectiles), and each character has their own set of FRCs. It flashes blue if done right, and this type of RC can be done on whiff, making it an extremely invaluable technique to be able to extend pressure through feints or return to neutral without as much commitment. However, they require sufficient practice in various scenarios in case an FRC-able attack connects on hit or block which can throw off timing normally reserved for a whiffed attack. Introduced as a mainstay since the first Guilty Gear XX title, though by the time of Λ Core Plus R, their window of input increases by 3 frames.
Easy Force Roman Cancel ?% It is an equip-able ability in Survival Mode of Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus. It increases the active frames of a Force Roman Cancel to 20 and even turns them blue to make them easier to do.
Yellow Roman Cancel ?% First appearing in Guilty Gear Isuka as part of a Robo-Ky upgrade that turns base FRC's into YRC's (which are essentially FRC's with an even lower tension cost). Also equip-able in Survival Mode of Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus. It reduces Tension usage by half: all Force Roman Cancels cost 12% Tension and all Roman Cancels cost 25% Tension. It has no effect on Force Breaks, Chaos RCs, or Overdrives in general. It is used for projectiles.
Chaos Roman Cancel 25% Also equip-able in Survival Mode of Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus. It enables the player to cancel Special Attacks, Overdrives, and Force Breaks into each other just by input alone (no button pressing) at the minor cost of 25% Tension.
